Making copper and silver 143 I LOVE YOU charm necklaces from an old copper disk

I found this neat heavy copper disk at an estate sale some time ago and have had some fun cutting it up with a jeweler's saw. Here's what I made today.
This disk is just over 2mm thick. It's no easy feat to saw through this thing! I only broke one saw blade today. Not bad.
Four tags cut and filed smooth. Two hearts and two rectangles. Well, they're kind of rectangles. I like the imperfection of these shapes.
Soldering on sterling bails and loops.
Stamping with my great new SToNZ stamp.
Why didn't I get one of these made years ago!?
Two 143 necklaces finished and ready to list in my Etsy shop.
143 means I LOVE YOU. It's a texty shorthand thing.

I love you:
1 letter in I
4 letters in LOVE
3 letters in YOU

I'm thinking Mother's Day. I nice gift for Mom.
We're just a month out. Are you ready?

Heavy Metal - Thank you Pinterest!

This cool guy happened upon my arm party SToNZ bracelet photo on Pinterest last week and tracked me down on Etsy. He emailed and asked me to make him three heavy chain bracelets in his size. I think they look amazing! Hope he agrees. Shipping them to Massachusetts today.
Thank you, Marcus! (and Pinterest!)

Build A Dream

Next Saturday the Greater Cleveland Chapter of Habitat for Humanity will be celebrating their 25th anniversary with their creative event "Build A Dream," at The Calfee Building on East 6th Street.
The silent auction will feature Up-Cycled art made by local artists. How fun!
For more info on tickets click here.

Of course, "upcycled" is right up my alley.
This is my donation for the invitational silent auction, using a few old keys, authentic cobalt blue beach glass, and lots of sterling silver.

All proceeds raised at the Build A Dream 2013 party will help Cleveland Habitat provide quality, affordable homes for their worthy Partner Families.

Look what's new from SToNZ!

A couple of new things in my Etsy store this month:

Recycled Silver Fork Tine Bracelet

I have been challenging myself to see how many new pieces of jewelry I can create using a couple of old sterling silver forks I picked up at an estate sale recently. Today I decided to do something with the 8 fork tines I had cut off of the forks. I filed down each end so it was smooth. Hammered it flat. Then hammered each tine into a loop and linked the loops together into a funky chain.
I added a nice sturdy swivel clasp to one end, and a length of cable chain links at the other end so that the bracelet could be sized to fit just about anyone.
Each tine link was soldered closed using hard solder for durability.
What the bracelet looked like after soldering, filing, sanding and oxidizing.
After polishing and buffing.
An unusual chunky heavy chain bracelet. Ready to list!

Recycled Silver Charm Necklace

More silver jewelry created from a vintage sterling fork! I cut a couple of little chunky circles from the fork handle using a jewelers saw.
Filed them smooth and soldered on handmade silver jump rings. Hung them on a wonderful 18" slinky curb chain.
A sweet little charm necklace that can be custom stamped with letters, numbers or a few short words of your choice. What would you put on the charms?

Sterling Heart Bracelet Inspired by an Old Fork

What became of the other silver heart that was cut from the old silver fork that I found at an estate sale?
It's now the centerpiece of my newest SToNZ silver chain bracelet. Nice and heavy...for someone who really LOVES silver. And yes, it IS your size!

Creating Contemporary Sterling Jewelry From Antique Flatware

Those who know me, know that I am hopelessly addicted to rummage sales, estate sales and flea markets. I have an eye out for all sorts of things, but these days I am drawn to nice tools that I can add to my jewelry bench, or anything made of sterling silver that I can somehow incorporate into my SToNZ Jewelry designs.

Last week I was at a sale where the kitchen drawers were filled to overflowing with all sorts of utensils and gadgets. For the most part, there was nothing of interest there, until I spotted a couple of broken forks way in the back of one drawer.
The people running the sale seemed to feel these broken forks were worthless, so I got a nice deal. Yep, they were sterling.

I had an idea for a personal challenge: try to make as many pieces of new jewelry from the silver on these broken vintage forks as I could. How fun!
The first thought I had was to use the pretty roses from the neck of each fork. I used a jewelers saw to cut them out. Sanded them smooth, and soldered sterling posts on the back. Earrings!
Then I hammered one of the fork heads flat and sawed out a couple of free form hearts.
After some filing and sanding they looked just right! Next, to solder on silver jump rings and turn these lovely things into charms.
I decided to hang one from a slinky silver curb chain and added a wire wrapped freshwater pearl charm. A great combination. The necklace works with the charms worn together or one at a time.
And who would ever guess that the heart started life as a fork, once upon a time?!
Recycling can be very fun.
CHARMING, actually.
